Nowadays, a good home and a good lawn should go hand in hand. A lot of hard work is required to ensure that the grass grows well and remains healthy. All lawns just like other plants, need water to live and grow. The weather season and the type of grass planted will mostly likely affect the amount of water you use on the lawn. The most common types of grass used in lawns are the Bermuda, the buffalo and the St. Augustine.
The Kentucky blue grass is another type of grass used on the lawns that requires more watering than the rest. The amount of water used on the lawn is also influenced by the type of weather season. The lawn is mostly dry if not watered well because of the high rate of evaporation during the summer season. In short this means that in the summer seasons, one should ensure that the ground is well watered to avoid drying up.
On the other hand during the winter season there is less humidity thus the lawn is able to retain most of the water. The moisture on the ground during the winter season is basically due to the low rate of evaporation. Fertilizing the lawn is also another important way of caring and maintaining the grass. The type of grass planted and the weather season also influence the time to fertilize the lawn. The Bermuda and the buffalo are mostly fertilized during summer because they are considered as the warm season grasses.
Some of the grasses which are referred to as the cold season grasses like the Kentucky blue grass are fertilized during the winter season. Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous are the main essential components found in fertilizers and they are also plant nutrients and additives. An alternative of buying fertilizers is making your own from the mixture of coffee grounds, bone meal and wood ashes. Ammonia, beer, mouthwash and Epsom salts are ingredients which can also be used to make fertilizers.
Another important method of lawn care is weeding. Tall grasses rarely have weeds thus the grass should be allowed to grow for more than three inches. Weeding can also be done by the use of vinegar which is strong and does not affect the grass in any way. The other effective methods of weeding include pulling them out, using herbicides to kill the weed and also laying mulch to prevent them from growing. Pests in the lawn can be eliminated by using pesticides. Snails, slugs and insects are the pests commonly found in the lawns. Instead of using money buying pesticides, you can save it by regularly cleaning the lawns. Lawn care also involves mowing the grass to make it thicker.
